The Laboratory

Brookfield Bath

ASTM D2983

This test method is used to determine low shear rate viscosity of lubricants. The Viscosity can range from 500 to 1,000,000 mPas. The bath temperature can range from 5+ to -40C.

Quenchometer

ASTM D6200

New Quenchometer: Soon we will be able to test samples using the ASTM D6200 Inconel Probe method as well as the Japanese Standard JIS K2242 Silver Probe Method.  We also can quench polymer samples

Foaming Test, Seq I,II,III

ASTM D892

This method determines the foaming characteristics of lubricating oils at 24C & 93.5C

ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma) Optical Emission Spectrometer

This ICP contains a Charge Injection Device (CID) Detector. The CID Detector enables ILA to perform analysis on any number of complex matrixes with optimal line selection. Other advantages using a CID Detector is verification of the results by multiple line selections for elements, semi-quantitative screening of unknown samples, reprocessing & evaluation of the data at any time, and unlimited concentration range coverage with line switching. Idemitsu Lubricants America Corporation’s ICP contains an Echelle Optical System that creates 2-dimensional images of your elements.  ILA's ICP wavelength coverage is from 165nm – 1,050 nm.  Elements that are covered by ILA’s methods are: Ag, Al, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Si, Sn, Ti, V, Zn.

Karl Fischer Titration System

ASTM D6304

This method is used to determine water content in lubricating oils by indirect analysis. Water is thermally removed from the sample and is swept by dry air into a Karl Fischer Titration Cell. Iodine is generated and once all the water has been titrated, excess iodine is detected and the titration is terminated. 1 mol of Iodine reacts with 1 mol of water.

  Viscometer

ASTM D445

This Automatic Viscometer measure viscosities at 40C & 100C. Each bath contains two separate viscosity tubes and can run up to 13 samples for each tube.

Titration System

ASTM D664,D2896,D4739

These methods measure the Total Acid Value or Total Base Number of lubricating oils.

Acidity may be caused by oxidation, contamination from fuel combustion or from additive components.

Alkalinity is derived from detergent additives and is used to measure lubricant degradation.

FTIR (Fortier Transform Infrared Spectrometer)

Used as a fingerprint for identification or contamination.

FTIR-Golden Gate Diamond ATR Crystal

The Smart Golden Gate sampling accessory is fast, sensitive and robust. Because of its rugged design, this accessory can be used for almost any sample type in research or quality assurance and control environments. The Smart Golden Gate also requires little or no sample preparation; the only requirement is that the sample is in optical contact with the diamond. With up to 250 pounds of pressure available to achieve this, good spectra can be run from even the hardest rocks and powders.

Automatic Pour Point Analyzer

ASTM D5949

Pour Point is a flow characteristic and it is a measurement of the lowest temperature at which movement of an oil surface is observed.

Cold Crank Simulator

The purpose of this method is to define the motor oil viscosities between the temperatures of -5C and -35C that correlates with engine crank ability.
