Idemitsu
- Technology at Work
In
an effort to improve fuel economy in its
automobiles, a Japanese automaker developed
and launched the Continuously Variable
Transmission (CVT) in 1999. As a partner in
this important technical development, Idemitsu
spent over 15 years in the research and
development of Traction Drive Fluid (TDF), a
high performance, low temperature transmission
fluid that was an integral part of the success
of the CVT introduction.

The
Problem Solver
The
decision to halt production of harmful CFCs
used in automotive cooling systems severely
affected the industry since it depended on the
CFC refrigerant R-12 (freon). The auto
industry decided to replace R-12 with
HFC-134a, better known as R-134a. However,
since R-134a could not be mixed with the
mineral oil in the existing lubricant, the
auto industry chose a new synthetic lubricant
from Idemitsu – polyalkylene glycol (PAG)
– for use in their air conditioning systems.
Today, Idemitsu is the leading supplier of PAG
oil for auto air conditioners with greater than
70% market share worldwide.

Environmentally
Friendly Cutting Oils
The
Daphne Magplus Series cutting oils available
from Idemitsu Lubricants America Corporation were created to protect
humans and the earth from dioxin generated by
incineration of chlorine compounds. ILA
applied advanced blending technology to
replace chlorine-type additives with newly
developed nonchlorine Extreme Pressure (EP)
additives for a safer, more environmentally
friendly product.
